Description
1952 Thames Half Ton Custom Panel Truck
The Fordson E83W, also sold later under the Thames brand, is a half ton light commercial vehicle that was built by Ford of Britain at the Ford Dagenham assembly plant (home of Fordson tractors) between 1938 and 1957 and was available in several different build configurations. The van was sold in Australia as the Ten Ten and in some countries only the cowl and chassis were imported and local bodies built. The E83W was aimed at the small haulage, trade and merchant market, sectors in which it sold well. A Utilicon estate wagon conversion was available in the UK. During and after World War II, many specialist variations such as mobile canteens, ice cream vans and even fire pumps were built on the E83W chassis. The E83W was powered by the 1172 cc Ford 10 hp side valve engine, with a 3 speed gearbox, and was heavily geared down in the rear axle. This made the Fordson much slower than the saloons, with an effective top speed of not much over 40 mph. Apart from the 10 hp engine, the E83W shares few parts with the other small Fords, which does make the spares a little harder to obtain.
This particular custom 1952 Thames has a boxed frame, Mustang II front cross member, tubular upper and lower control arms. front disc brakes, rear drum brakes, and narrowed rear end with 3:55 gears. All the original wood was removed and replaced with steel. Five inch extended doors and opera windows added along with a hand fabricated 3-piece hood with a DF Metalworks latch with inside hood release and hand formed front and rear bumpers with show chrome.
The engine is a 1983 2.3 liter Ford, 10-1 compression, stock Ford balanced crank, 30 over pistons, 1995 Mercury Merkur head, ported intake with a Holley 390 performance carb. C-4 transmission with V8 clutches and shift kit with a 2,500 rpm stall converter. Ceramic coated 36" header with 2" tubes. Paint is a Ford bright silver with brilliant royal purple. Silver ultra leather upholstery throughout, dark gray carpets. Both seats are 6-way power. Julianos 3-way shoulder seat belts. Dynamat sound deadner was used throughout including the floors, firewall, doors, side panels and roof. 16 gallon fuel tank. Hagen gas filler lid. Headwind headlights. Vintage Air heater/defrost unit. Specialty Power windows on all 4 windows. Specialty Power windshield 2-speed wipers. Bear claw latches. Lokar 3-speed shifter LED indicator. Keyless entry system. Shaved doors. TPI Tech gauges with a white backlight. Mustang e-brake system. Peep mirrors.
