Description
1953 Studebaker Commander Starlight-Starliner Hardtop Coupe
The 1953 Studebaker Commander Starlight-Starliner Hardtop Coupe had that graceful European style and was designed by Raymond Loewy. Many people often referred to this style as the Loewy coupes with some even claiming that this was the most beautiful coupe ever produced. While these cars were indeed engaging they were not very powerful. The Commander V8 engine was an overhead valve design of 232.6 cubic inches and rated at 120 horsepower - indubitably not a muscle car by any stretch.
The 1953 Studebaker Commander Coupe was a good seller and Studebaker could have sold many more than they did but the company figured that the other body styles that were available would sell better. There were 20,859 2 door coupes built in 1953 and while they had some rust issues, finicky brakes and only fair construction quality (mostly the frame in the 1953 model) the cars sold well and were commended for their style and beauty. Distinctive American styling, affordable, appreciation capability, milestone cars with good (not muscle car) performance, the 1953 Studebaker Commander Starlight-Starliner Hardtop Couple has earned its place in automotive history.
