Description
Cutler Donahoe Bridge Madison County Iowa
The Cutler Donahoe Bridge was constructed in 1870, is 79 feet in length, is a Town Lattice truss covered bridge, and only one of two bridges in Madison County to have a pitched roof. The other pitched roof bridge in Madison County is the Imes Bridge also build in 1870, is 81 feet in length and very similar in style to the Cutler Donahoe Bridge. The Cutler Donahoe Bridge has trusses that are fastened together with tree nails, a gable roof and vertical plank siding. The Cutler Donahoe Bridge is also built somewhat lighter than the other five remaining covered bridges as it only has one main beam at the top and no arch style beams used in its construction. This bridge was originally located over the North River near the town of Bevington and was moved to its present site in the beautiful Winterset City Park in Winterset, Iowa, in 1970. This lovely park, and this bridge, is located just a few block east of the John Wayne birthplace home and museum.
