Description
Mount Rushmore National Memorial South Dakota
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a massive sculpture carved into the solid granite face of Mount Rushmore which is located in the Black Hills in Keystone, South Dakota, and is approximately 30 miles from Rapid City, South Dakota. The Mount Rushmore carvings feature 60 foot sculptures of the head of United States Presidents George Washing, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are scaled in size to a person that would be about 465 feet tall. The land that contains the memorial is 1,278 acres in size. This monument was sculpted by Danish American Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln Borglum. Construction on the memorial started in 1927 and the presidents faces were completed between 1934 and 1939. Gutzon Borglum dies in March of 1941 and his son Lincoln took charge of the construction project. Initially each president was to be carved from head to waist however lack of funding caused construction to come to a halt in late October 1941.
