Description
Southernmost Point Key West At Seven In The Morning
We stayed several days at the Southernmost House Hotel in Key West and the Southernmost Point Buoy was only a couple hundred feet from the hotel. A very popular spot for tourists, there is usually a crowd of people always there taking pictures, sunrise, sunset and all hours in between. This photo was taken at seven in the morning and while their was a crowd of people present everyone was being very courteous to everyone taking pictures - besides it was a beautiful morning and everyone was in a great mood.
The original marker used to just a small sign however it was quite often moved around or just taken away by visitors as a souvenir. The large concrete buoy was added in 1983 by the city and since then no one has picked it up and walked away. This marker buoy is one of the most visited and photographed attraction in the city of Key West.
While the buoy marker states it is the southernmost point in the continental U.S. it is not quite as accurate statement as one might thinki. The actual southernmost point in the State of Florida, as well as the continental US, is actually located ten miles away at Ballast Key and is a privately owned island south and west of the city of Key west and visitors are strictly unauthorized to set foot upon this key. The actual true southernmost point of the island of Key West is located on U.S. Navy property on the Truman Annex just west southwest of the buoy by about 900 feet but this property can not be entered by civilian tourists. There is a pubic beach by the Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park where civilian tourists can go and this spot is about 500 feet farther south than the buoy marker. The buoy also indicates that Cuba is 90 miles away is somewhat of a rounded number as the closest Point of Cuba is 94 statue miles due south.
If you ever find yourself in Key West, Florida, be sure to go by the marker - just about everyone does at one point in their visit there so do not break the tradition on your visit.
