Description
Steam Locomotive Number 7 Black Hills Railroad Company
The Number 7 steam locomotive is a Prairie Type 2-6-2 that was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Ozan-Graysonia Lumber Company in Prescott, Arkansas in 1919. This locomotive, when first put into use was known as Engine Number 2. Several years later the Engine Number 2 was sold to the Caddo and Choctaw in Rosboro, Arkansas and was renumbered as Steam Locomotive Number 7. In 1938 number 7 was sold to the Prescott and Northwestern Railroad and then later sold to the Higgins Shipbuilding Company in New Orleans. Engine Number 7 was then again sold to Elliott Donnelley and then leased back to the Black Hills Central Railroad in 1961 with the Black Hills Central acquiring ownership of the locomotive in 1975. In 1962 Number 7 pulled a standard gauge tourist train and now sits on display in Hill City, South Dakota. Number 7 may possibly still be operational with a little work however it appears that is has not seen service for quite some time and seems to now be a historical display piece. The Steam Locomotive Number 7 weighs 125,00 pounds with 96,000 pounds of that weight sitting on its 46 inch drive wheels.
