1956 Chrysler Imperial Southampton Two Door Hardtop
The Imperial was Chrysler Corporations brand for their luxury automobile between 1955 and 1975. The Imperial name returned from 1981 to 1983 and then again from 1990 to 1993. The Imperial name had been in use since 1926 and was just a top of the line option and not a separate make. In 1955 Chrysler decided to make Imperial their own division for competitive reasons. The new division Imperial cars no longer carried the Chrysler label and were registered in states they sold in as Imperials although they were still part of the Chrysler Corporation.
The 1956 Imperial came out with smaller tail fins and a larger Firepower Hemi engine that was 354 cubic inches in size and produced 280 horsepower. Chrysler brought forth the push button PowerFlite automatic transmission and was available on the Imperials.
