Description
1642 Jonathon Corwin House
The Jonathon Corwin House is also known as The Witch House, was constructed around the year of 1642 and is located in Salem, MA. John Corwin was a civic leader and a magistrate and was called upon to investigate the diabolical claims of witchcraft in Salem and surrounding communities.
It is claimed that the Corwin house is the only structure that still stands in Salem that has direct ties to the Witchcraft Trials in 1692. Despite many rumors and stories related to his house, there is no factual indication that any interrogation or trials were ever held in this house. There is also no documentation that an accused person was brought to the Corwin home and it is very unlikely that judge Corwin would have used his private home for the conducting of legal proceedings. Interrogations were normally undertaken in either the Old Meetinghouse or at Ingersalls Tavern.
The Corwin house is a wonderful and excellent example of Colonial seventeenth-century New England architecture and an opulent First Period home featuring a steeply pitched salt-box roof and large central chimney. Also distinctive to the house are the projecting two storys, the five very steep gables and the triple-casement windows. The Corwin house has been carefully protected and preserved, now owned by the City of Salem, for all to enjoy and continues to provide a strong historical link to the surrounding area as a museum that is open for tours six months of the year. The house remained in the Corwin family until the mid-1800s and Judge Corwin is buried close by in the Broad Street Cemetery after living in the house for more than forty years.
