Description
1762 Colonial Derby House
The Derby House was built in the 1761 to 1762 time period by a affluent Salem trader named Richard Derby. This house was built for his son, Elias, supposedly for the younger Derbys marriage. This is a single-family house and is one of a small number of early mid eighteenth-century house still surviving in eastern Massachusetts and is the oldest surviving brick house in Salem – This home is an excellent example of fine craftsmanship and Colonial New England styling. The house faces the harbor, the Derby Lighthouse and the wharves that provided the underpinning for the Derby family wealth.
