Description
1819 Custom House Salem MA
The 1819 Custom House in Salem was the last in a series of thirteen custom house that were built in Salem starting in 1649. The Custom House is a Federal style structure, is a fashionable, handsome structure, flooded with light on the interior giving it an airy feel to it. These features were characteristic of Federal styled period structures. There is a formal entrance to the Custom House on the second floor and is reached by climbing a large flight of solid granite steps. Multiple chimneys, a large cupola and a beautiful golden eagle provide for a very stunning roof line on the Custom House. The original hand carved gold eagle can be seen inside the Custom House and is a marvelous example of fine New England craftsmanship. This structure was used from 1819 to 1937 and is now adminsterd by the National Park Service.
