Description
1857 Highland Light Station (Cape Cod Light)
The Cape Cod Highland Light Station was built in 1797, reconstructed in 1853 and replaced in the same location with the existing tower in 1857. The Highland Light Station (Cape Cod Light) is the oldest and tallest light tower, at 66 feet, on Cape Cod. The Highlands of the Truro area have been continually eroding since the 1797 light was activated and in 1990 there was only 128 feet of the original 500 foot setback remaining.
In July of 1996 the Highland Light was only 100 feet away from the cliff edge and at a cost of 1.54 million dollars the entire 430 ton light station was lifted and moved back 453 feet to its now much safer location. The light now sits 120 feet above the ocean and the light beam is about 174 feet above the water level and continues to give mariners a warning about the treacherous sandbars off of this shoreline. The Cape Cod Highland Lighthouse is a huge attraction on Cape Cod and attracts large numbers of visitors annually.
