Description
1870 Old Mission Point Lighthouse
It was a most pleasant day when we paid a visit to this old superbly maintained light. Very light breeze, warm temperature in a very quiet location proved the perfect combination for time spent at Old Mission Point.
The beautiful Old Mission Point Lighthouse was active from September 10, 1870 until it was decommissioned in the year 1933. Old Mission Point Light is located on the 45th Parallel, half way between the North Pole and the Equator on the northern tip of Old Mission Peninsula north of Traverse City, Michigan. Visitors to the park are able to enjoy a self-guided tour through the lower section of the lighthouse and for a very small fee you will be able to climb to the top of the light. The drive from town up and to the lighthouse at the tip of Old Mission Peninsula has been selected as one of the top ten coastal drives in North America. Beautifully preserved lighthouse in a outstanding location where one can enjoy the beach, watch birds and other wildlife, picnic, wait for the sunset or just hang out and relax.
