Description
1871 Derby Wharf Lighthouse Salem MA
The Derby Wharf Light was first lit in 1871 as a navigational aid in Salem Harbor. The Derby Wharf Light, along with the Fort Pickering (Winter Island) and Hospital Point Light in Beverly, marked the main channel leading into the harbor providing safe anchorage. The Derby Wharf Light is at the end of the old Derby Wharf, is about twelve feet square at the base and about 20 feet in height. During periods of high tides and stormy weather, it is not unusual for the water to completely cover the wharf and surround the base of the light making it appear to be floating in the water.
The original light used in the Derby Wharf Light Station was an oil lamp that shined through a sixth-order Fresnel lens that was about 17 inches in height. The light currently is solar powered and uses a light that flashes every six seconds and can be seen for four nautical miles. The Derby Wharf Light Station was one of only 5 square planned light stations in the country.
