Description
1871 Fort Pickering Lighthouse
The 1871 Fort Pickering Lighthouse is also know to many as the Winter Island Light and is located in Salem, Massachusetts. The light tower was built in its existing location in 1871, is a cast iron structure that is lined with brick inside and has a large concrete foundation. The height of the focal plane in this light tower is 28 feet above mean high water levels. Salem Harbor is the second deepest harbor in the state and this lighthouse was an important navigational aid to all of the mariners seeking safe harbor in Salem.
In 1969 the Coast Guard left Winter Island, the Fort Pickering Light was deactivated and an offshore buoy was installed. In 1983 the light was once again activated as a private aid to navigation by the city of Salem. The foundation was repaired and made sound and a facelift of the entire tower was completed in 1999. The original keepers house no longer exists and the 52 foot wooden walkway that lead from the keepers house out to the light tower is also completely gone.
