This bridge was built in 1890, the 2,376 feet Walnut Street Bridge was the first bridge to connect and provide a pathway from the Chattanooga, Tennessee downtown with the North Shore. The Walnut Street Bridge was once known as County Bridge and connected the predominantly white city on the south side of the Tennessee River with the large black work force on the north side in Hill City which was also known as the North Shore, a town that was annexed by Chattanooga in 1912.
The bridge was closed to motor vehicles in 1978 and remained unused and unrepaired for nearly a decade. Repairs and structural modifications were made and the bridge was converted into what is now a robustly used and highly popular pedestrian walkway. The Walnut Street Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1990.
