Description
1913 Imp Cyclecar
The 1913 Imp Cyclecar is in a small group of unusual and rare vehicles found on the American roads ever since the early days of the automobile. These little lightweight cars normally only allowed for the seating of two people (one sitting behind the other) and were powered by somewhat low power motorcycle type engines that provided for very good fuel mileage.
The Imp Cyclecar had a production range of 1913 to 1914. This little cyclecar had a V-twin motorcycle type engine, it was air cooled, had about 10 to 12 horsepower, and was connected to a 4 speed forward only friction transmission that sent power to the rear wheels by means of a rather long V-belt. The Imp did not have any axles, each wheel was independent and connected to the frame via flat leaf springs that had yokes fitted to the ends for the wheel spindles to be attached to. The front spindles would pivot allowing for steering the little car and the rear spindles were attached to a rigid arm.
William B Stout got his feet wet in the automotive arena by creating the Imp Cyclecar and after that went on to build the Ford Tri-Motor airplane and the Stout Scarab. It is thought that somewhat less than perhaps a thousand of the Imp Cyclecars were manufactured.
