Description
1773 New England Saltbox House
This particular example of the New England style saltbox house is constructed around a massive central chimney. This house with its slanted shape roof dates back to the 1650 Colonial New England time period. The saltbox style house exteriors were commonly finished with clapboard or other wooden siding, are usually at least two stories high on the front side, one story high in the back, have a central chimney system and a sloping gable roof with unequal side. Transoms were also usually found above the entrance to the home. One of the most well-known saltbox houses is the birth place of John Adams, the second President of the United States and is now part of a National Historic Park.
