Description
Roughlock Falls - Spearfish Canyon South Dakota
Found in a picturesque environment located in a side canyon in Spearfish Canyon, Roughlock Falls is one of the Black Hills most beautiful areas and is part of the South Dakota State Park Game Fish and Parks. Created by the Little Spearfish Creek, the creek flows down a spectacular gorge and then tumbles off of a fifty-foot limestone ledge into a series of lacy cascades surrounded by towering cliffs, thick woods comprised of pine and birch trees, and luscious green undergrowth. One of the most popular waterfalls in the Canyon, Roughlock Falls is known for its crystal clear water. This stunning waterfall is one of the Black Hills most photogenic spots and the areas was used as a set for some of the final scenes of Dances With Wolves. An extremely easy hike to the falls rewards one with all the elegance and serenity that nature has to offer. Spearfish Canyon is a creek carved gorge that is more ancient than the Grand Canyon and until 1893 was only accessible by horseback. Spearfish Canyons narrow 1,000 foot walls are among the most spectacular scenery in the Black Hills.
