Description
Round Island Lighthouse
Round Island Lighthouse was completed in 1895, operated under the supervision of the United States Government, and was in continual use for 52 years. It was typically manned by a crew of three people until the beacon was replaced by an automatic light in the year 1924. After the light was replaced a sole caretaker occupied and operated the lighthouse station from 1924 until 1947. After a new automatic beacon was constructed off of the south shore of Mackinac Island, the Round Island Lighthouse was abandoned. Located in the Hiawatha National Forest, The United States Forest Service now supervises the lighthouse structure.
