Sleeping Bear Dunes On A Stormy Day
Even on a cold, windy, rainy day with a heavy bank of fog moving in behind you the view from the top of Sleeping Bear Dunes is quite impressive. Sleeping Bear Dunes is a United States National Lakeshore along the northwest coast of Michigan on the Lower Peninsula near Empire, Michigan just a few miles west of Traverse City, Michigan.
It is 450 feet from the top of the dune to the shoreline below and the bank is at a 33 degree angle - very steep. Signs advise that you do not make the trek over the edge and work your way down to the bottom of the dune as the return trip to the top can take as much as two hours if you can make it back up at all. Getting down is pretty easy, only takes between 10 to 30 minutes depending on how daring you are. Countless rescues are performed at the dunes bringing people back up to the top at a very high expense to those being retrieved. Costs can run from a few hundred dollars to several thousand of dollars if the helicopter has to be called in.
