Description
The Key West Cable Hut
I have often wondered how many people make the journey to Key West, find their way to the Southernmost Point Buoy Marker and then fail to notice the unassuming little concrete cable hut that they walk past on their way to and from the buoy on South Street, the hut is only 22 feet away. This image was captured about seven in the morning as the warm sun was rising on another beautiful day in the Florida Keys.
The little Cable Hut is a concrete structure, was constructed on the mainland and then moved to Key West by the Flagler railroad to its current position on the island in 1917. The main purpose of this little hut was to provide protection for the connection between the land line and the 125 mile long underwater telegraph cable that linked Key West and Havana, Cuba. These lines were operational until 1987 when they ceased to function due to the problems caused by their years of exposure to the harsh marine environment.
