Description
Austin Of England A40 Somerset Saloon
Austin used the distinctive standing up Flying A hood ornament on the A40s and is thought of by many enthusiasts to be one of the best factory emblems produced. The Austin A40 Somerset automobiles were manufactured by the Austin Motor Company between 1952 and 1954, and then it was replaced by the A40 Cambridge series. There were over 173,000 Somerset models sold, with 7,243 being convertibles, before production of this vehicle came to an end.
The A40 Somerset replaced the Austin A40 Devon model and shared several components with the Devon to include a similar 1.2 liter straight 4 cylinder pushrod engine. The engine in the Somerset was updated to produce about 42 horsepower and was able to drive the vehicle to a top speed of around 70 miles per hour.
Austin used a four speed, plus reverse, transmission in the car design and was controlled by a column mounted shift lever. Four wheel hydraulic brakes were on the vehicle along with a handbrake that operated on the rear wheel only and together provided all of the cars stopping ability. The interiors contained two very snug fitted front seats finished in leather. The front seats could be adjusted to provide for a bench seat arrangement and the back seat was a heavily cushioned bench seat that would provide sitting room for up to three people.
Automotive photos look great displayed in a den, family room, office, garage, auto service shop waiting rooms, tire stores, parts stores, hot rod shops and upholstery shops. If you are not interested in one of these photos for yourself do not forget about your friends or other family members that have an interest in the automotive field. Photos make marvelous gifts and are suitable for numerous occasions ! ! !
