Description
The Venice Train Station, constructed in 1927, was the final stop on the Seaboard Air Line Railway. Until the passenger trains stopped operations, in 1971, the train station was the destination for those desiring to purchase property in the new town being established by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. The cadets of the Kentucky Military Institute, arrived near Christmas and stayed until nearly Easter. The final train to make use the station was the Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus, which maintained its winter home in Venice from 1960 until the tracks were no longer usable in 1992.
For several decades, the station was left abandoned, to vagabonds, graffiti artists and decline from the elements. Sarasota County purchased the property from the railroad company that owned it and restored it to its original condition. The renovated station opened in January 2005, is currently a stop for the Sarasota County Transit Authority, has a train car on display and the station is available for tours.
