Artist's Description

The historic lighthouse opened in 1848 and the keeper of the light was a woman, something very rare in the 19th century. Over the course of time the Key West Lighthouse went through a number of enhancements to include the installation of a Third Order Fresnel Lens as well as an extension to the tower which allowed the light to be seen from a greater distance, the addition of Keepers Quarters, and finally the electrification of the light.

In 1969, the U.S. Coast Guard decommissioned the Key West Lighthouse due to technological advancements.
