Artist's Description
1791 Portland Head Light
George Washington gave a directive to build the Portland Head Light in 1787, the project was completed and the light was lit in January of 1791. The conical light tower stands 80 feet in height and 101 feet above the mean water level and is located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The light tower is constructed of rubblestone and the interior is lined with brick. The light tower has changed very little since it was constructed and the current light in the tower is visible for 28 miles.
