Description
1877 Chatham Light Station Cape Cod
The first light station in Chatham was established in 1808. The original twin towers were 70 feet apart and about 40 feet in height and positioned about 228 feet back from the eroding coastline. A second set of 40 foot tall twin brick towers replaced the original lights in 1841. In 1870 a huge store hit the Cape that caused severe erosion of the shoreline leaving the light towers only a mere 48 feet from the edge of the bluff. In December of 1879 the south tower collapsed onto the beach below the bluffs edge and a little over a year later the keepers house also collapsed onto the beach.
In 1877 two new twin light stations were erected and moved further inland replacing the 1841 station. The new towers were built upon large concrete bases, were 48 feet tall and were brick lined cast iron structures and a new keepers house was constructed between them. In 1923 the north Chatham tower was moved to Nauset Beach however the original concrete base for that tower still remains intact in Chatham. The Chatham light is fully active and the keepers house now provides housing for the Coast Guard.
