Description
1889 Memorial Presbyterian Church St. Augustine
Located in St. Augustine, Florida, the beautiful Venetian Renaissance church is certainly to be included among the many historic landmarks that can be found in the Old City. The Memorial Presbyterian Church is called by many as the Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church. Built in 1889 and dedicated in 1890, Henry Flagler financed this church in memory of his daughter who had passed away giving childbirth. This superb structure is in the Flagler Model Land Company neighborhood and is a section of St. Augustine that Henry Flagler had established. This striking church is patterned after St. Marks Basilica in Venice, Italy. There is a marble mausoleum located within the church and when Henry Flagler dies in 1913 he was interred there beside his daughter Jennie Louise, her infant Marjorie and his first wife Mary Harkness Flagler.
A most notable exterior element that one notices on seeing the church is the large copper dome that has a Greek cross placed at its top. It is approximately 170 feet to the top of the cross. The exterior of the church consists of a mixture of concrete and coquina. The church is located at 36 Valencia Street in St. Augustine and if you find yourself in town it is well worth the time to visit this church as the interior is also quite amazing. This photo was taken in September 2012.
