Artist's Description
1955 Nash Statesman Super 4 Door Sedan
At one time Nash was one of the largest and oldest of the independent car makers, staring as the Jeffery Motor Works when Charles Nash purchased the company after leaving as president of General Motors in 1916.
The Statesman was the mid-line model of the three in the Nash line-up in the fifties, Ambassador, Statesman and Rambler. This particular Statesman was the fancier Custom version with two-toned paint and a continental kit. This car was also originally equipped with somewhat rare factory air conditioning. Power for the car is provided by Nashs flathead six cylinder with a two barrel carburetor producing about 85 horsepower.
In 1954 Nash merged with Hudson and created the American Motor company (AMC). AMC merged with Kaiser in 1970 and inherited the very valuable Jeep nameplate. Chrysler absorbed AMC in 1987 mainly to get the Jeep nameplate and makred the end of Americas oldest independent automaker.
