Description
1961 Oldsmobile Starfire Convertible
Oldsmobile named this model series of automobiles after the Lockheed F-94 Starfire jet fighter aircraft.
The Starfire was brought into the product line in January of 1961 as a convertible and was now its own model line that shared a body and wheelbase withe the Super 88 and Dynamic 88 models. The car was loaded with standard options that included leather bucket seats, a center console with a tachometer and a floor mounted shifter for the automatic transmission.
This vehicle was the first U.S manufactured full size production automobile that had a console mounted floor shifter for the auto transmission. The standard V8 engine was the Olds Skyrocket 394 cubic inch engine, the most powerful one Olds made in 1961 and was equipped with a four barrel carburetor. The 1961 Starfire convertible was more costly than the larger Ninety Eight model series making it the most expensive Olds in the 1961 model lineup.
