Description
1970 AMC AMX 360 Cubic Inch 4-Speed
The American Motors eXperimental concept (AMX) originated in 1965, under the direction of designer Charles Mashigan. A steel-bodied working prototype, constructed by the Italian coach builder Vignale, begin making the rounds at several auto shows. The long hood and short tail styling generated interest and AMC finally agreed it should be put into production. Designers and engineers then modified the styling and proportions of the show car by removing nearly two feet from the unibody of the Javelin. While the Javelin was designed to compete with cars like the Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang, the AMX's closest competitor was the Corvette. In 1968, the Corvette base price was 4,275.00 and the AMX was under $3,300.00.
1970 was the third and final year of production due to disappointing sales. The two-seat 1970 AMX and underwent a minor restyle that included a new front grille, longer hood, functional ram-air induction system, revised tail lights and an upgraded front suspension system. The basic engine was now a 360-cid V-8 with a more efficient exhaust and a switch from Carter to Motorcraft 4-barrel carb improved performance on both the 360 and optional 390 cid motor. The interior now included a wood grain dashboard, center console, two-spoke steering wheel and taller bucket seats with integrated headrests.
After production ceased on the AMX the same nameplate was used on the 1971 to 1974 Javelins. Although these two automobiles were similar in many ways the AMX was not a Javelin and it is the two seat AMX model that was the unique blending of muscle and sports car that became the crown jewel of AMCs performance years.
