Description
Looking Glass Falls
Pisgah National Forest
Located on U.S. 276, on the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway in the Pisgah National Forest, located near Brevard, NC, you will find the beautiful 60 foot tall Looking Glass Falls on Looking Glass Creek. This is an extremely popular waterfall and perhaps one of the easiest to view, either from the roadside stop or from the base of the fall. Nicely maintained steps are provided for a very easy gentle drop down to the base level of the falls where if you really want to you can wander out and enjoy the water while using caution. The falling water is quite powerful and many of the rocks are quite slippery so be careful and enjoy your experience.
For those interested in photographing these beautiful falls be aware that due to the position of the falls the sun comes up behind and over the water fall in the mornings all year round. Afternoon lighting can be quite good but at times very harsh producing deep dark shadows and extremely bright highlights on the falling water. An overcast or very cloudy morning or afternoon will usually provide one with the best lighting (more flat) on these falls for taking pictures. During the winter the ice formations created can be spectacular. On the day we were there it was very late morning, heavy clouds and a light rain was falling creating a very flat even lighting which proved to be not too bad for capturing images.
