Description
Marys Rock Tunnel, located on Skyline Drive, is a 610-foot (190 m) long tunnel blasted through the mountain. Constructed in 1932. It took three months of drilling, blasting and clearing of debris to carve through the 600 feet of solid granite to construct one of Sklyline Drives greatest construction challenges and is viewed as one of the engineering feats of Skyline Drive. Marys Rock has its share of legends of how the rock received its name.
One legend says that Francis Thornton married Mary Savage, brought her up the mountain to show her the property they would own and gave it her name. There is also the folktale that claims Thornton had a daughter named Mary who climbed the mountain when very young and returned with a bear cub under her arm. Marys Rock is a 3,514 foot tall mountain in the Shenandoah National Park. The peak of Marys Rock is a little bit south of the Thornton Gap Entrance to the park and is the eighth highest peak in the Shenandoah National Park.
