Description
Pilgrim Monument
Provincetown
Cape Cod, MA
This quite tall and striking tower can be seen for miles and from just about any location in Provincetown providing a different and unique view of the massive granite structure from various locations around surrounding area. The tower is the tallest structure in the U.S.A. that is made completely from granite. The granite used in the construction of the tower came from Stonington, Maine, and is designed in the style of an Italian bell tower.
The monument is 252 feet, 7.5 inches in height and is a total of 350 feet above the level of the sea. It takes about ten to fifteen minutes to walk the 116 steps and 60 ramps to the top where one is greeted with a magnificent 360 degree view of the surrounding area. The cornerstone was laid by Theodore Roosevelt in 1907 and in 1910 Howard Taft dedicated the finished Pilgrim Monument tower.
