1928 Chevrolet Inline 4 Cylinder Engine
The Chevrolet Inline-4 engine was one of the first automobile engines designed by Arthur Mason and was introduced by Chevrolet in 1913. Exposed pushrods actuated the vales in a crossflow cylinder head that was removable. This engine was called the overhead-valve engine or valve in head. this engine was manufactured in a single size through the 1928 model year and then it was replaced by the Chevy Straight-6 engine.
The engine in the photo is powering a 1928 Chevrolet National Imperial Landau Sedan and was the last year this engine was used by chevrolet. The 171 cubic inch engine was the only 4 cylinder member of this design group. In its last year of use, 1928, the engine received a newly revised carburetor, higher compression, aluminum pistons and larger valves giving it a rating of 35 horsepower at 2,200 rpm.
