Description
Clark Tower - Winterset Iowa
Clark Tower, often referred to as the Clark Castle, can be found in Winterset City Park in Winterset, Iowa. Winterset is the birthplace of John Wayne and is where the Bridges Of Madison County was filmed. Clark Tower is a limestone tower that is castle like in appearance. Clark Tower was erected in 1926 on the eighteenth anniversary of the founding of Madison County in memory of Caleb Clark. Caleb Clark was a stonemason and was the first white settler of Madison County along with his wife Ruth Clanton Clark. Clark Tower stands about 25 feet tall, is constructed of limestone blocks and the top of the tower provides a very nice overview of the surrounding area.
Winterset is a great little town to visit and along with the bridges of Madison County surrounding the town the birthplace home of John Wayne is just a bit off of the town square as well as the John Wayne museum. If you happen to find yourself in Winterset be sure to eat at the Northside Cafe, the food is wonderful and the deserts are killer good. The cafe is located in the town square on the north side of the courthouse.
