Description
Mount Mitchell Observation Deck View
Elevation 6,684 Feet Above Sea Level
Mount Mitchell was called Attakulla by the Cherokee and is the highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains as well as being the highest peak in mainland North America east of the Mississippi River at an elevation of 6,684 feet. The closest higher peaks are in the Black Hills of South Dakota and the highland foothills of Colorado.
The mountain was renamed Mount Mitchell after Elisha Mitchell, a University of North Carolina professor who explored the Black Mountain region in the year 1835. He was able to determine that the height of the range exceeded by several hundred feet that of Mount Washington in New Hampshire which at the time was thought to be the highest peak east of the Mississippi.
The Professor, Reverend Elisha Mitchell is buried at the summit of Mount Mitchell. Professor Mitchell was originally buried in Asheville however his body was re-interred at the top of Mount Mitchell in June of 1858 and the burial site was marked by a simple cairn until 1888 when the grave site was redone. Elisha Mitchell lost his life during a scientific exploration of this mountain on June 27, 1857, at the age of 64.
