Description
Sandstone Falls
Sandstone Falls is a very wide waterfall on the New River a few miles north of the town of Hinton, West Virginia. Where the sandstone ledge and the falls are located the river is an enormous 1,500 feet wide. The river water flows over and around this ledge, creating an island and number of falls that vary in height and width depending upon the water flow of the river. There is no single point from which you can see the entire falls and the eastern ledge of the falls is the highest however you can only get distant views of this section. There is a series of trails and some boardwalks that allow you to get some good vantage points for photographs as long as the water level is not too high when you are visiting. When the water flow is heavy the falls are basically drowned and covered with water allowing for very limited access.
The falls can be found about 10 miles north of the town of Hinton along River Road with the road pretty much coming to an end when you reach the falls area. If you take exit 139 and head south on Route 20 you will take a very windy road that climbs up and down the sides of the gorge on the way to Hinton where you will cross the New River and then pick up River Road. Somewhat out of the way, the roads are not the best in the state but you will be rewarded with a wonderful view of Sandstone Falls.
