Description
First Parish Church In Plymouth Main Entrance
The First Parish Church in Plymouth is located at the base of Burial Hill on the town square and is an historic Unitarian Universalist church. Burial Hill can be seen to the right side of the church in the photo. The congregation was founded by the Pilgrims in 1620 and the Christian services were originally held on the Mayflower, then at a fort on Burial Hill until 1648. The first of four churches were constructed on the town square starting in 1648, 1744 and 1831. The current Romanesque styled building, with its 88-foot-tall Norman inspired tower, was finished in 1899 and was the replacement for an 1831 wooden Gothic structure. The main three stain glass Tiffany windows above the main entry are usually found with the protective screening over them to prevent them from damage and are removed at certain times of the year or for special events. The First Parish Church in Plymouth is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
