Description
This is a photo of the original Citadel Military College adjacent to Marion Square in Charleston, South Carolina. South Carolina constructed this arsenal, on property now known as Marion Square, to house munitions. In 1830 the State entered into a contract with the War Department for Federal troops to garrison the arsenal using troops from Fort Moultrie. In 1832 troops from the State militia replaced the Federal troops.
It was eventually proposed to convert this structure into a military academy and in December of 1842 the State Legislature passed an act to convert the arsenal in Charleston, as well as one arsenal in Columbia, into Military Schools. On March 20, 1843 the first 20 cadets reported to the Citadel Academy in Charleston on Marion Square. March 20, 1843 is a date that is celebrated as Corps Day.
The architectural style of the Old Citadel is a Romanesque styled building with Doric columns and Roman arches incorporated on the interior courtyard area. The Old Citadel is now being used as an upscale historic district hotel and has space for meetings, conferences, special events and weddings.
